Our lightning talk at ROSCon Global 2026
Two minutes at ROSCon Global in Toronto on why safety work on robots is slow, costly and private, and what changes when it is done in the open.
Ilia Baranov gave a lightning talk introducing the consortium at ROSCon Global 2026 in Toronto, the annual conference of the ROS community. The recording above is the talk as it went out on the livestream.
The talk sets two lists against each other. Safety work as most robotics teams meet it is boring and scary, costly, slow, and siloed: every team qualifies the same components on its own, in private, and the results are never seen again. Open safety is flexible, cheaper, easy to start, and shared: the analyses, tests, and reference designs are produced once, in public, and anyone can build on them.
That is the whole argument for the consortium in four words each. The protective stop is where the work starts, and SAHARA, a tool for running hazard analyses and risk assessments, is next.
If you build, deploy, or maintain open source in a system where failure causes harm, get in touch.
